We're visiting my family, and I'm feeling anxious. I was doing so well, haven't taken Xanax in a long time. Now I'm trying to decide if I should just take it or if I should try to get to the root of where the anxiety is coming from. Being around my father has always been triggering for me, but isn't there a way to grow out of it?? It's very frustrating.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so bad.
I also get very anxious being around my father. I don't know if 'growing out of it' ever happens, but I sure hope it does!
I hope you have a relatively good visit even so.

I say get to the root of it. As u yourself said, you cant run away from the past. It lives inside of u. I know its hard and painful but u can do it! And nothing wrong with taking some meds if they help you. Hatzlacha!

Family is a big trigger for me too. Getting over it is a big task, but you'll be much happier if you do. (I know I'll be happier when I get over it.) I find I feel I'm inferior to them because they don't have the same challenges to the degree that I do. But at the same time I realize that one triggering relative is passive agressive and won't admit it and the others have bloated egos. I'm glad I'm not the one with the bloated ego becuase behind it is a low self esteem. In the end, I realize they are jerks and I"m relatively happier without them so I limit contact.

I don't see the harm in taking some xanax for such a triggering situation.
From the way you described type father in the past, I think anyone would get anxious around him. So to me it sounds perfectly normal.

Best of luck!

It's good you know what is triggering you. Sometimes medication is necessary to help get you through the triggering situation....so I say take it.

Hope you were able to decide. In my opinion, whatever it takes to calm you down is the way to go.

Thanks everyone! You guys are amazing! I'm feeling better now, B"H. I ended up not taking Xanax and working through the emotions. B"H that worked for today. Wish me luck tomorrow. It's good to know that Xanax is there if I need it. Thanks so much for the support. It's a hard situation, and you guys are making it easier for me.

Thanks for asking! Feeling better today, B"H. Probably because I haven't spent time with my father yet. Took the kids on a fun trip. It's nice to get a break!

How much longer, HopefulMom?
I empathize with you... it's tough being around 'triggering' family members...

Thanks! I'm doing well, B"H. Especially when I stay away from my father, unfortunately. I just submitted the book manuscript last week! Now I'm trying to put the house back in order.

Not sure exactly, but something like proof reading, by a staff editor.
