Why does the most painful disease have to be anonymous and left for all of us to suffer alone? I just don't get it. I am thinking of starting a blog or something. It's time for everyone to fight this together. People with cancer have support communities, and don't have to be anonymous. People with any disease have family and friend support. But depression, the WORST of them all, is ignored, as if it doesn't exist. As if it's not even real.
WHY?????
How can we change this???

This is the billion dollar question. How can we get more support if we're afraid of revealing our identities?
Maybe with baby steps-you know, one little movement at a time?????

It's strange. I know what you mean about it being a secret. I met someone on facebook today and the person came right out and talked about depression alchoholism and such. I was in awe. He just said he was bipolar just like somone else may say they have depression. It was a strange conversation. In the non frum circles the stigma isn't so strong. It has been made clear through studies that mental illness doesn't pick the dummies only. It's an equal opportunity employer. I don't get why it's such a secret unless the cause is a secret.

In the secular world, people are more educated about mental illness. In the frum community, those who haven't encountered mental illness know nothing about it. And with lack of knowledge comes fear. People don't know how to react to us.

I think a blog, or books, or magazine articles are a great idea. The more awareness and education the better.

I'm trying to think of what we can do to lower the stigma and normalize these kind of issues..

the only way to do it, is to stop being depressed anonymously. But it's kind of a Catch 22 cuz being openly depressed to everyone may end up causing more depression, although i think im willing to take the chance

Is it only the stigma that stops us from reaching out? Its hard for us (or me) to talk to therapists who talk to depressed people all day. I think were just blaming it on stigma, when really its the fact that we cant share
does anyone hear what im saying cuz im not explaining myself welll...no energy...
