Hi everyone,

Hope you are having a great morning and thank you for contributing to this forum!

I sometimes think I'd benefit a lot from seeing a social worker or therapist. But in the past I've seen two, and they both treated me as if I was crazy (sorry for saying that but I don't know how else to phrase it!)

I wanted to get your opinion on whether I should try with someone else - this would be a third time. I mean maybe the problem resides with me, not them. What do you guys think?

Thanks so much in advance!

People often consult second or third opinions regarding physical ailments.

So consulting therapist should be no different. And with therapists, there may be more reason for consulting additional therapists, since a good chemistry in the relationship between doctor and patient is especially important, and not every therapist is the right chemistry.

Whats the harm in consulting somebody else? It may just be a match!! Maybe even discuss your concerns about trying a new therapist, with a new therapist...
Best of luck!

Thanks so much for your responses!

The harm would be wasting my time and money.

People consult multiple doctors for "physical ailments", but psychotherapy is much more subjective and not easily measurable. Physicians perform objective procedures which, if not done correctly, can be done better by a different physician with measurable results. Psychotherapy is to some extent just consulting on a personal level and very subjective by nature and therefore difficult to measure. If an individual such as myself dislikes a specific psychotherapist it's more likely to be based on a personality conflict than, say, my eye doctor who did not catch my retina detachment last time I was in the office.

My experience, specifically, has been that the said individuals look at completely normal behavior as pathological, and in the short term this negatively affected my self esteem, which ironically was the reason I went in the first place. In fact I actually felt worse in the long run, and not better, and to answer your question Chana when I am spending hundreds of dollars for these services I get the sense I probably shouldn't be more miserable than when I started off, you know?

You can do research, to find out which therapist has a reputation for being understanding, smart, and effective.

No. You shouldnt feel more miserable. and that just proves further that you need to try a different therapist.
