I dont really have any suggestions cuz I dont do the whole "cathartic" thing ( i find that kind of song to be boring ) And I only recently started "rebeling" and listening to non-jewishmusic so I dont know much of it yet, b ut, when you get a suggestion of a song, or even if you already have some songs that you find help you, you can go to pandora.com and create a station from that song and then you can find similar ones.
Best of luck!

My favorites for when I need to cry are Kol Berama from Simcha Leiner, Mama Rochel from Abie Rottenberg, Tefila Le'ani and Chaneini Hashem from Abish Brodt, Shema Yisrael from Meydad Tasa, Zechor Davar L'avdecha (Skulener Niggun from Holocaust). Secular: I turn to you by Melanie C (Kol Beisha) is very good. I also find Hatikva and Yerushalayim shel zahav inspirational, as well as Ani Mamin or any song related to Moshiach.

I like 8th day music. They are healing and upbeat at the same time.

I like Maccabeats....I also enjoy the silliness of silly songs from larry from vegitales....it's a christian group but the silly songs arent christian...hysterically funny actually. "Lean on Me" by bill withers, muppets -- they are just fun. Let it be by the beatless ...... Octopuses Garden I find relaxing. Poems, Prayers and Promises by john Denver. Lenny Solomon in general but mostly his more recent works are really good. I think that covers 99% of what i find therapeutic, fun, funny, or all of the above. You can't ever beat having Mana Mana playing by the muppets. .
