I wrote a letter to the editor of a well-read newspaper (they say more than 11,000 people read it, and most of my friends and family do as well)

To my surprise, not only was my letter printed, but the author basically ripped me to shreds, saying I am a "nothing."

To be honest I am not taking this editor personally, but I am more concerned my friends will recognize me as the writer. There is some identifying information but only if you knew me very well.

I showed the article to a friend last night and she said "that person who wrote the letter is an idiot"...at least she didn't think it was me!

This is so weird. Any thoughts?

I know this is obnoxious to request, but could you post your letter??? It may very well be that you are right and the others are wrong since you're seeing things through a diffeent set of "glasses." These "glasses" have you seeing better than others because of therapy and life experiences. But I can't say for sure without seeing it. Also some ppl say the person who wrote it was an "idiot" because they want to cover their own insecurities. It doesn't sound like the "idiot" comment had much evidence backing it up. Perhaps you are right or perhaps you are wrong. Either way your opinion is still just as valid as the next. It is immature and innapropiate to tear apart a letter to the editor. It gives a one direction forum to attack the original writer without any way for you to create a dialogue. I don't approve of that behavior. If you don't like what someone wrote in a letter to the editor, don't publish it. But attacking it is nasty and uncalled for (I think.)
