My son lives in Manhattan and suffers from schizoaffective disorder and is bipolar as well. He is seeing a psychiatrist in Brooklyn. He feels he is overmedicated (I tend to agree). He does not like his psychiatrist; he is looking for someone an little more "warm & fuzzy". His doctor basically just throws pills at him. Furthermore, at this point in his life, he simply doesn't have the energy to shlepp to Brooklyn on the subway. We would like to find him a doctor somewhere near him (he lives on the Lower East Side) who is warm, caring, and hopefully accepts Medicaid, or else someone who is at least somewhat reasonable. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know if it is important that your son see someone in private practice. If not, in that neighborhood, Beth Israel Medical Center has a psychiatric clinic and is likely to take medicaid. I do not personally know of any private psychiatrists that accept medicaid in Manhattan, though I do know some in the Bronx.

Thanks for the heads-up. Since posting, my son and I have been to the Cabrini Mental Health clinic on 2nd Avenue, which is even closer to him than Beth Israel. He was evaluated by the clinical director there, a Dr. Adams. Remarkably, my son seems to like him, which is half the battle. He has a follow-up appointment with him tomorrow, Jan 3rd. Hopefully they will get along and Michael will have somewhere he can go without too many logistical problems and speak to someone with whom he can develop a rapport. Thanks for your interest!

There are still some dr.s who are not just in it for the money. I have a wonderful Dr. who does not charge me an arm and a leg. Also, he talks to me on the phone for free. I don't know if this is his poicy with everyone, but he knows that I cannot afford more. He does not just throw pills at me, He tries to keep me on the lowest dose possible, and changed my meds more times than I can count(due to side-effects).
