I have a past history of mental illness. BH I am fine now but with all the stigma of mental illness in the frum community finding a shidduch hasn't been easy. I have found that the minute someone hears about my past they drop me. I want to know what other people either currently suffering from mental illness or with a past history, has done to find a shidduch? Or is everyone experiencing the same problems as me?

The problems surrounding emothional/behavioural issues and shidduchim are so complex. With physical problems, its very easy to get the right medical info but with mental its hard because people often hide a lot and parents and even shadchonim are not equipped to know what to ask and how to see things.

Someone with past or present emotional issues can only go through shidduchim with a proffessional in the mental health field. Believe me, I know of too many broken engagements and marriages that were due to mental health issues.

Thats not to say there is no hope, of course there is. Everyone has their bashert at the right time... one just has to figure out the best way to discover it!

In addition, for females on medication, its very important to ascertain whether these meds can be taken during pregnancies....

Also, I have heard of cases where people stop a certain treatment of medication to be able to say they are not receiving therapy etc.... only to have an episode pop up down the line which suddenly opens up a can of worms.

I wish I could point people in the direction of an organisation dealing with shidduchim for these issues, but as far as I know , I do not know of one at this point. Maybe someone else does know?
