Hi Dr. Price,
I'm wondering if you have any ideas of what to do?
I began seeing a new psychiatrist after a hiatus of 2 years of not having any psychiatrist at all. He prescribed lamictal and has been increasing the original(25 mg) dose up by 25 mg every 2 weeks. He told me to call each time before I increase the dose. At 75 mg I asked him what to do, as I was running out of pills. He said"call me next week".
So I did, leaving him a mssg. He did not call back. I tried him a couple of times that week but he didnt answer the phone. I didnt know what to do but I noticed on the bottle it said it had refills so I refilled it at the drugstore. I still felt I should talk to him bc I dont really know what his plan is re: upping the dosage. So I left him a mssg about one and a half weeks after my first mssg asking to make an appt. I figured at least the prospect of earning $250 will get him to call back. No reply. I was feeling very insecure and paranoid, thought he deliberately was not calling ME back, maybe he spoke to my previous psychiatrist and she warned him to run far away from me etc. Eventually I told my therapist and with me sitting in her office she left him a mssg asking him to call her and to call me. (mind you, he had never spoken to her even though at my intake appt he said he would... I think there should be communication between my therapist and psychiatrist?) That was a week ago. He didnt call either of us.
At this point I think something is wrong not with me but him.
So I put out $500 for my initial session which I managed to scrape together, but now do I find someone else? Do I pay out $500 again for a new evaluation? if not, how will the new psydoc know what kind of tx to recommend? I dont know exactly what the first psydoc.'s plan was.
Do I keep chasing him? If he dropped me I wish I could use the 500 bucks for the new one, I really could use it.
At least I didn't get attached to him yet...

If you have tried to reach the doctor repeatedly with no reply, it is likely time to find a new one. He can transfer the evaluation to the new doctor and your therapist can speak to the new doctor in advance of your first appointment so as to save time and hopefully cost. Lamictal is typically used for mood swings/depression and increased every 2 weeks as follows until you are feeling better: 25mg then 50mg then 100mg. Most people start to see a response around 100mg. Maximum dose is 400mg-500mg. You go up slowly to avoid the itchy body rash. If you develop the rash then you must stop the medication. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks for replying. I think that's what I need to do.
How do I get the medical file from the psychiatrist if he doesn't seem to be getting my messages?

That sounds like it would be effective but I don't want to scare him especially if it's not true...

LOL!! Guess who called me today?!?
No apologies, no excuses, no reasons, just jumped right in as if we spoke yesterday... really don't know what to make of him. I guess just irresponsible?
