Hi Dr Price,

I read the most bizarre article in the New York Times about doctors board certification. Apparently there is some controversy over it among some physicians. Don't know how familiar you are with the issue, but my issue is, why wouldn't I want my doctor to be taking rigorous exams every 10 years - if not more so - so that they remain educated? Any thoughts on the issue? I appreciate it.

It is not about the examination. In order to sit for the examination, they now require you to take many expensive courses to be eligible to even register for the examination. It used to be that you could complete most of the continuing medical education credits needed for free through reading journals and attending free high quality lecturers at work or through the hospital/university. Doctors are protesting that this current system appears to be a money making scheme at some level and is so burdensome that it becomes a deterrent to maintaining board certification status which by law was not necessary but as you mention, is highly desirable and a good idea to keep up to date. In response to protest from the American Psychiatric Association, the Board is in the process of changing the requirements so now many doctors are sitting tight for the moment to see what the new requirement will be.
