Hi Doc,
I have bipolar, and was wondering if I can ever be myself again, or is this going to be a life-long battle always having ups and downs?

It all depends on what type of Bipolar you have. Bipolar I rapid cycling with psychosis would be the most severe followed by Bipolar II (hypomania/depression, followed by "Bipolar III" (antidepressant associated activation), followed by cyclothymia (mood swings). As you can see there is quite a continuum here. Many Bipolar II's and lesser severe cases can function well after psychoeducation and cognitive-behavior therapy to monitor and control moods. It all depends on the individual.
I hope this was helpful.

Rabbi Price, M.D.

Perfection for us humans is an illusion. Balance is an achievable goal which includes appropriate highs and lows. Even the most extreme case of Bipolar I Disorder with Psychosis can achieve balance. Medication along with many other interventions can help achieve it.

Good Yom Tov,
