Hi, I know someone who has bi-polar disorder but is non medication compliant. I heard that there might be a possibility of getting intravenous medication once a month. Does this exist for bi-polar disorder or is the only option to have an outsider force him to take his medication?

I think you mean intramuscular medication i.e. it is injected into the muscle once every 2 to 4 weeks so that the patient does not have to remember to take medication orally every day. There are some medications available in this form which can be helpful in managing bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, such as Risperdal Consta, Haldol Decanoate, and Prolixin Decanoate.

What are the side affects of intramuscular medications?

Aside from pain at the injection site, the side effects are the same as for these medications taken orally.
