Dear Dr. Price:

Your valuable responses sort of stimulate one to ask more questions.

What is basically the difference between MAOI's and SSRI's? Is it true that MAOI's are avoided nowadays because of their side effects? Is it fair to say that MAOI's are only given to people with very serious problems? Herbs and other medications that work in a similar fashion as MAOI's do should be used with the same care as the one for MAOI's? Is it true that the lifestyle of someone on an MAOI is different from the one of any other individual?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

EPS

SSRI's elevate only serotonin (mostly) hence their name SELECTIVE serotonin reuptake inhibitors. MAOI's inhibit their enzyme which breaks down other neurotransmitters as well thus elevating them. Once must adhere to a rigid diet while on some MAOI's which limits their use to more severe cases which might be managed with medications that do not require dietary restrictions, like SSRI's. MAOI-like herbs do not seem to require the dietary restrictions MAOI's do. Caution is always good when taking medicinal herbs because they are essential pharmaceuticals with a broad range of effects, side effects and interactions with medications.
