I really need to be able to share my ups and downs with people who "get" it. If you are in Bklyn and want to come to a free peer support group, please let me know as soon as possible.

Why don't you consider a telephone support group ?
That way it won't be limited to just Brooklyn.

I don't think that I'm the only one in Bklyn struggling this way.

That is true. However, many people in Brooklyn do not want to travel to a meeting.
How many responses have you received ?
With a telephone support group, you can draw from a much wider area.

There are tons and tons of Brooklyn people who would gain from this!!!
While a phone meeting is great, nothing compares to face to face i know this first hand from extensive experience with both.

Here are some ideas: let therapists know they have access to all the people in need. Have fliers hung in local shuls. Post on Imamother and other popular women's sites. Notify organizations like relief, yitti libel, Nefesh, Ohel outpatient, etc. Many of these orgs have an intranet to post notifications to all members...

What's the format? Who's it for? What's the goal? Who's in charge?

Also, with people being so open and vulnerable, what happens when inevitability someone's feelings get hurt or if someone in pain takes it out on another member?

I hate to ruin the party but from my experience Most peer led support groups fall apart because of this. The only ones that last are ones with very extensive ground rules like AA and Emotions Anonymous.

What do you guys think?

Love you guys!
Always,
MoMo

There is one advantage to a phone meeting.
People can protect their anonymity better.
Many people may feel very stigmatized face to face
but would be willing to join a phone meeting..

Momo, thanks for your support. I'm not really worried about the group falling apart-the Refaenu group in Paramus went very smoothly.
I am feeling stuck though. I'm not so computer savvy-don't know the ins and outs of how to get the word out, and am not sure if I will be able to proceed. Maybe I should just give it up.

Shver, I think those days are over. People are more open to MI . That's what I think.

Yes! We are forming a peer support group for women in Bklyn. It will be in Flatbush on Tuesday mornings. Will post details as they become available.
