I would like to introduce a new organization called ADAPT: Attention Deficit Awareness for Parents and Teachers. We have started a chapter of CHADD: the national organization for AD/HD (www.chadd.org) in Brooklyn that is sensitive to the needs of the Jewish community.
Our goal is to spread awareness of AD/HD in the Jewish community to individuals, parents and teachers. We have found that in the Jewish community AD/HD is a disorder that is both prevalent and misunderstood. Members of our community who are dealing with AD/HD personally or as a parent do not have a central source of resources and support.
The teachers in our schools are for the most part not trained in the educational needs of a child with AD/HD, a child who needs to be taught a bit differently in order to succeed. The difference between hope and frustration is education. We hope to provide education and support to both parents and teachers so that our children can receive the help they need to learn and grow.
We are based in Flatbush, NY but we will work together with any community in the area that requests. Our services include support groups, providing information about AD/HD, parent training and teacher resources. If you would like to set up something in your neighborhood, just let me know and I’ll be glad to help!
