Hello everyone. I just found out about this forum, is it new? Anyway, I have a 19 month old daughter with DS and am trying to research any of the nutritional interventions. They seem very commercial, yet I would love to hear if any of you use them and are happy with them. Also, perhaps someone has another idea how to enhance my daughter's nutritional intake, is it true that children with DS may not be absorbing some of the nutrients and may be deficient? Looking forward to hearing any ideas / thoughts...and maybe we can get the word out about this forum so we can generate some conversations.
It's nice to have found a Jewish forum.

Nutritional intervention is a very hot topic in Down syndrome, for a variety of reasons. Since DS is not a disease, there is no pharmaceutical interest in research to find a "cure". Therefore, any interest is directed towards intervention to improve cognitive funtioning and/or overall health. This may or may not be coming from a sincere desire to help our kids, and there is certainly no "scientific" proof as to the efficacy of most of these supplements. Therefore, one needs to approach this topic with caution. Having said that, many parents can tell you that when their children are getting the nutrients they need, and enough sleep they are more attentive, less prone to illness, etc. So, what to do. I took a bottle of a vitamin supplement designed for kids with DS to my pediatrician, who is experienced with DS and open to alternative and natural intervention. He felt this was a good multivitamin supplement FOR MY SON. Please remember, not all kids with DS are the same.My son has his health issues, his specific weak points and stronger areas. We have several kids with DS in my neighborhood who are the same age, and they react differently to the same medication. Find a health practitioner who is open to the idea of nutritional intervention in general, and knows your daughter and have him/her look at the ingredients. Also know that nutritional intervention can be done without laying out a fortune of money. Look carefully at your daughter's diet and see what you can do to get the most out of what she is eating. I know, this is not always easy, since our kids tend to have a variety of difficulites which make a healthful balanced diet a challenge. but even small changes can sometime make a difference. B'hatzlacha, and enjoy your daughter!
