My 7 year old son has asthma. He was taking pulmicort 400mg/day and is doing fine, but I was concerned about growth stunting. Asmanex is not approved for children under 12 as an Asthma medicine (220mg), but it is approved for children for nasal allergies (50mg) and has the best profile for not causing growth stunting as compared to any other corticosteroid. There has been a study showing that Asmanex at one puff a day does as well as 2 puffs a day for children so potentially it is less medicine and with corticosteroids that is the goal. Are there any doctors out there that prescribe Asmanex for children in spite of the lack of approval?

my son is 3 and already short for his age. he's been on pulmacort for over a year, and the pediatrician says i shouldn't worry about the growth issue. did you find out if it really stunts growth? i was scared about steroids and calcium deficiency, but was told that as long as the steroid isn't ingested, and only inhaled, it won't affect calcium in the bones.
