I AM A 30 YEAR OLD FEMALE . I HAD SURGERY FOR A FISTULA BETWEEN THE BOWEL AND THE BLADDER, IN MAY OF 2005. BORUCH HASHEM ACCORDING TO MY GI DOCTOR I AM DOING VERY WELL NOW. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE DOCTOR PLANS ON KEEPING ME ON 6MP FOR LONG TERM. I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT PLAN BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MORE CHILDREN AND ACCORDING TO WHAT I READ UP ON 6MP IT IS NOT THE SAFEST IN PREGNANCY. MY GI DR. HAS NO PROBLEM WITH 6MP IN PREGNANCY BUT I AM NERVOUS ABOUT IT. MY OB/GYN ALSO THINKS I HAVE WHAT TO WORRY ABOUT BUT HE CLAIMS HE WOULD MONITOR ME CLOSELY THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY AND GIVE ME THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE.
DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH 6MP IN PREGNANCY? ANY OTHER IDEAS OR SUUGESTIONS ?MY CONCERN IS ONLY REGARDING PREGNANCY (NOT REGARDING BREASTFEEDING. )

i do not BH have experience with this, but wanted to throw out an idea-how about speaking to/consulting with a Maternal and Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist. they do extra training so that they are aka 'high-risk' obgyns. they'd know much more about this.

Hi! I have Colitis. I'm on 6mp also and my GI doctor is one of the best in NY (Mount Sinai) and he has no problem with it during preg. I went for a second opinion by another top GI doctor in NY (Columbia) he also had no problems with it. They say that there's enough research in pregnant women with out any problems. i'm just nervous if i do go off and have a 'flare up' while i'm pregnant there's no medications to take. I'm not yet up to getting pregnant again bec. i'm just in remission as they call it for a few months and it came back and now it's B"H away again but i'm waiting a while. I never did speak to my OB/GYN but he is a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist (as the other person suggested) and he's in research and stuff. i guess i should try to get in touch with him and ask sooner than later.
Good Luck!

I am pregnant now BH and on 6MP for Crohn's. I have been on 6MP for almost a year now. It finally kicked in after months of waiting and being on and off of Prednisone to keep my recurring flares in check.

I spoke to my GI - one of the top specialists in Mt. Sinai - and to both the MFM I've used previously and the one I am currently using - both excellent OB's, and all of these doctors told me that as they say with any other medication and pregnancy, if someone doesn't have to be on it, they shouldn't. However, based on the studies 6MP appears to be relatively safe for pregnancy. In fact, they say that, as opposed to for nursing - 6MP does NOT cross the placenta, but it DOES get into mother's milk (though they have not done enough studies on the effect of 6MP on breastfed babies. Still, most doctors will not recommend nursing while on 6MP)

And as far as medications for a flare during pregnancy, they seem to be pretty confident with prescribing Prednisone/other steroids if necessary.

One VERY important point to note, though is that all doctors will agree that you must be in remission before becoming pregnant!!
